Given the diversity of coffee origins, farm sizes, and production conditions
There is no one-size-fits-all solution to sustainability.
From climate change over volatile market to requirements by buyers, the challenges coffee producers face are many. Through our work we aim to ensure that coffee positively contributes to the livelihoods of producers, their families and communities, and the next generation chooses to stay in coffee. We don’t have the silver bullet, yet to create lasting and scalable solutions our work is guided by the following principles:
Sustainable Coffee
This is our own NKG program for traceable and sustainable coffee supplies to green buyers.
For each coffee, it provides clear and ongoing visibility into supply chains, ensuring that all – to the farm level – comply with specific social, environmental and economic criteria that are confirmed by third-party auditors.
Our standards are based on the Coffee Sustainability Reference Code of the Global Coffee Platform, and NKG Verified is GCP equivalent, 2nd party assurance.
Sustainable Livelihoods
NKG Bloom is our long-term investment in producers and in the infrastructure of our export companies.
From resistant varieties over training on reusing husks to unconditional mobile money loans, through NKG Bloom, we identify and provide the services producers need to address their key challenges and make coffee farming an attractive business for them and their families.
NKG Bloom is GCP equivalent, 2nd party assurance.
Good Agricultural Practices
NKG operates three coffee farms, focusing on producing the highest quality beans while promoting sustainable agriculture and nature conservation.
Fazenda da Lagoa is one of the oldest coffee farms in the region of the Campo das Vertentes. Following the most modern agricultural practices finest natural and semi-washed Brazilian coffees are produced in a healthy and diverse biodiversity environment. In the homeland of Robusta, Uganda, cherries are cultivated in a very high altitude on Kaweri Coffee Plantation. Selective picking and fully washed processing results in Robusta coffees of exceptional quality, remarkable and unique mild cup, yet full-bodied and slight acidity. Finca La Puebla is located in the north-eastern part of the state of Puebla, Mexico. Under a very unique regional climatic conditions, Arabica coffee cherries are selectively handpicked and fully washed. Additionally different timber species are planted.
