As pressures mount on Kenyan coffee, integrated nutrient management – guided by portable soil testing – is helping farmers make more informed decisions to improve their yields.

Kenyan coffee is mainly cultivated by smallholder farmers. Across the country, this occurs in mixed farming systems, where coffee sits alongside other crops and livestock on plots averaging just 0.2 hectares. Farmers can face a complex set of challenges, including limited access to finance, minimal external support, and the pressures of ageing trees and an ageing workforce.

At the same time, Kenya’s coffee industry – which produced 740,000 60kg bags in the 2025/26 harvest – is viewed favourably in the global market.
