Scope 3 emissions from green coffee, primarily generated at the farm level, account for the largest share of our corporate carbon footprint. At the same time, they are the most difficult for us to address, given the structure of our value chain. We are nevertheless setting ambitious targets to inspire innovation and are intensifying our efforts to reduce emissions within our supply chains.

Promoting biochar in Colombia

One of these projects is being conducted by our Colombian exporter SKN Caribecafé in partnership with biochar innovator Cotierra to support coffee producers in the Huila region. The project introduces scalable, on-farm biochar production solutions that help restore soil health, improve nutrient retention, and build climate resilience. At the same time, it enables producers to convert agricultural residues into valuable inputs, supporting a more circular production system that aims to increase farm productivity while reducing emissions at origin.

With a pilot project already conducted in a region that is home to over 84,000 coffee-farming families, this larger-scale initiative demonstrates strong potential to strengthen livelihoods and contribute to shared climate and sustainability goals.
