To support targeted climate action across the value chain, we have developed a Carbon Calculator in partnership with Meo Carbon Solutions, applying widely recognized product carbon accounting methodologies. The tool calculates the c carbon footprint of green coffee, covering emissions associated with farming, wet and dry milling, warehousing, and transport. It is designed to reflect the specific characteristics of our supply chains.

A central element of this approach is the use of primary data collected directly in the field by our trained staff, using NKG’s field-level data collection application. The data collection initially focuses on NKG Verified farms and project-related suppliers that are selected via a robust sampling approach. This direct engagement strengthens relationships with producers and enables a more detailed understanding of key emissions drivers.

Data validation and quality checks are coordinated by Group Sustainability through an iterative process with field teams. The analysis and reports are created centrally at headquarters to ensure methodological uniformity. The findings are presented and discussed with local teams to design supply chain-specific decarbonization and adaptation pathways.

Following an initial pilot in India, the Carbon Calculator is currently being rolled out by exporter companies in Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Vietnam, Uganda, and Kenya. NKG aims to progressively expand this approach across its major coffee supply chains, while continuing to refine methodologies, tools, and analytical insights over time.
