Our mission at NKG is to ensure that everyone contributing to the coffee journey can prosper sustainably. We are aware that this is often not yet the reality and want to live up to our responsibility and act within the opportunities we have and in partnership to ensure that we advance on this journey. This is why Livelihoods is the third pillar of our new Sustainability Strategy, focusing on advancing our human rights efforts and supporting improvements to the livelihoods of coffee-farming families.

Building on our internal pilot program SCIP (Supply Chain Integrity Program), and the work by our teams in coffee producing countries, we are setting up a comprehensive Human Rights Due Diligence System. The risk‑based human rights due diligence approach is aligned with internationally recognized standards and focuses on identifying and addressing actual and potential adverse human rights impacts. The same fundamental expectations regarding respect for human rights apply across the value chain, including producers, workers on estates, and workers employed by intermediaries, with measures tailored to risk, context, and NKG’s level of leverage.

Initiated under NKG Bloom, projects and NKG Verified, we aim to further deepen and scale the work of our field teams at origin, providing meaningful services to coffee farming families to enable them to improve their livelihoods. This means further professionalization of our teams, refining and expanding our scope of service offer and reaching more coffee producers. As a starting point, we will be undertaking Living Income Gap Analysis for each NKG origin. The objective is to understand the key levers for improvements in livelihoods and identify barriers that cannot be addressed by us, at least not alone, such as farm size and alternatives to coffee income.
